Discover The Best Scuba Diving In Costa Rica At Caño Island

The first bursts of crisp water splashed on my face as I slowly drifted below the surface of the expansive blue waters. Observing the way the aqua water turned to navy, I continued to float deeper and deeper. Now the sturdy black nozzle became my sole source of breath; each exhale propelled me farther into the depths of the mysterious ocean.

As I reached the cusp of the murk, the reef materialized before me. Between its crevices, I saw a microcosm of colorful fish swimming hurriedly beneath me. Broad and flat ebony fish trudged by, interrupting the parade of zesty orange and yellow schools that otherwise passed by.

Like another world untapped by humans, I felt particularly privileged to observe its inhabitants, who did not seem to notice my presence hovering above them.

As I gazed at this remarkable soul-shaking underwater world, I knew I had made the right decision to spend my precious vacation time scuba diving in Costa Rica.

After touring this wondrous world with the skill of my guide and a small group of fellow tourists,  it was time to gently make our way to the surface. Floppy fins and wet plastic slopped over the edge of the boat, leaving the bright-white deck slippery in its wake. I plopped down on the pale orange seat and stared at the coastline rather quietly. As the jungle-ridden cliffs passed me by, all I could think about was when I would be able to return once more.

Scuba Diving in Southern Costa Rica is a bucket-list worthy affair, especially if you are already a keen diver.

The Mystic Dive Center in Costa Rica is the most established scuba diving school in the area. It’s located in Ojochal, just steps away from the famed Playa Ventanas (a beautiful and secluded beach known for its window-like caves that can be explored during the dry seasons.) The Mystic Dive Center brings their divers to the nearby waters of Cano Island and the Ballena National Marine Reserve–perhaps the most beautiful places for scuba diving in all of Costa Rica. Both locations boast nearly perfect water conditions and more biodiversity than you know what to do with. Cano Island and the Ballena are national parks famous for their sheer beauty and plentiful opportunities for observing wildlife. You can plan on getting up close to an abundance of wildlife, varying from reef sharks, sea turtles, dolphins, humpback whales, and a plethora of fish species.
